Feature overview
Goals
The aim of the APN QoS Management feature is to allow CSP Users to create and manage Quality of Service (QoS) Profiles and also assign one QoS Profile to an APN. The feature also allows for the creation and management of Base APNs.
Functionality of the feature
Quality of Service (QoS) Profiles
In CMP, additionally, to assigning an APN to a SIM Card, some Platforms support assigning Quality of Service (QoS) attributes as additional configuration (like maximum bandwidth). CMP allows CSP Users to create as many Quality of Service Profiles as required and individually assign them to an APN, therefore each APN can be individually controlled with its dedicated QoS attributes.
In case a Platform requires such Quality of Service attributes, the QoS attributes are mandatory in order to provision a SIM properly. As a consequence, each Platform and Network Interface has to have one default QoS Profile in case any related APN has none assigned itself.
The availability of the APN QoS Management feature in the Resource Manager is not only determined by the license but is also driven by the related ACL, i.e. Users can only create and manage QoS Profiles if the feature is enabled and they possess also the required Access Rights.
Further, the QoS feature is only available for specific Platforms, which support such QoS Attributes to be provisioned.
For all other Platforms, the QoS Profiles are not available and can’t be assigned to related APNs.
Base APN
Furthermore, CMP introduces the Base APN to allow to reserve a specific Static IP range out of a shared APN for a dedicated customer and to create the same APN multiple times with different QoS Profiles assigned to offer more flexibility using the same APN.
For that purpose, the APN is split into a Base APN and an APN, which will have a mandatory relation to one Base APN. IP Address assignment is managed by the Base APN, however, the APN can override the settings from the Base APN, which allows to reserve an IP Address pool for a specific APN out of a larger IP Pool from the Base APN.
Base APNs can have a Primary DNS and a Secondary DNS IP Address specified. If a Secondary DNS is defined, CMP must ensure that a Primary DNS is also specified before saving the Base APN.
